Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Chinese zodiac sign?

Your Chinese zodiac animal is based on your birth year in the Chinese lunar calendar. Because the Chinese New Year falls between late January and mid-February, anyone born in those weeks may belong to the previous year's animal, this calculator accounts for that automatically.

What are the Chinese zodiac elements?

Each animal also has one of five elements, wood, fire, earth, metal or water, on a sixty-year cycle. The element adds nuance, so a Wood Tiger and a Fire Tiger are not quite the same.

Why does my birthday in January give a different sign?

If you were born before the Chinese New Year date for your birth year, your sign is the previous animal in the cycle. The calculator uses the exact lunar new year dates so the result is correct even near the cut-off.

Is the Chinese zodiac calculator free?

Yes, completely free, no sign-up, and your birth date stays in your browser.
